Everyday hair care

Everyday hair care routines, in plain terms

General information on washing, conditioning, brushing and styling. Your own routine is something to talk over with a provider.

Small habits, everyday hair

Most hair care happens at home, in a few minutes a day. Washing, drying, brushing and styling all put some wear on hair, and a few habits make a difference to how much.

Gentle handling of wet hair, less high heat, looser styles and products suited to your hair type are the usual topics. A provider who works with hair can look at your hair and scalp, ask about your routine, and suggest things to try or products to ask about. This is general information. Hair changes that come on fast or in patches are a reason to see a doctor or dermatologist.

What a provider looks at

  • How often you wash and what you wash with
  • How much heat you use, and at what settings
  • Whether you wear tight styles, extensions or weaves
  • Signs of breakage, dryness or thinning along the hairline
  • How your scalp looks: oily, dry, flaky or irritated
  • The products you use and how much

Ask what they notice and which one or two changes they would start with. A short list is easier to stick to than a full overhaul.

Before a hair care consultation

  • Write down how often you wash, dry and style your hair.
  • List the products you use, or take photos of the labels.
  • Note the heat tools you use and their usual settings.
  • Note the styles you wear most and how long you keep them in.
  • Jot down any recent color, bleach or chemical services.
  • Write your questions, and what you would like to change.

Wear your hair in a usual style so the provider can see how you normally wear it.

Questions about hair care routines

How often should I wash my hair?

There is no single answer. It depends on your scalp, hair type, activity and products. A provider can look at your scalp and routine and suggest a rhythm to try. This is general information, not medical advice.

How should I brush wet hair?

Wet hair can stretch and snap more easily. Many people use a wide-tooth comb or their fingers, start at the ends and work up, and go slowly. A provider can suggest tools and technique for your hair type.

How much does a hair care consultation cost?

The provider sets the cost, and this site lists no prices. Ask what the consultation includes and whether there is a charge for follow-ups. The how it works page explains what happens after you send a request.

Share only what you are comfortable sharing. A local provider decides what is suitable at a consultation.
